Die Trockenzeit von April bis September ist die ideale Reisezeit für den Savannah Way. Während der Regenzeit (November bis März) können Straßen überflutet sein und einige Regionen sind zeitweise nicht erreichbar. Prüfe vor Fahrtantritt die Straßenbedingungen bei den lokalen Behörden.

Fahrzeug

Für die komplette Strecke empfiehlt sich ein Allradfahrzeug (4WD). Für viele asphaltierte Abschnitte – insbesondere in Queensland und Teilen des Northern Territory – ist auch ein SUV oder Fahrzeug mit Allradantrieb (AWD) ausreichend.

Wichtige Sicherheitshinweise

Informiere dich über Wettervorhersagen sowie Warnungen vor Buschbränden, Unwettern und Zyklonen. Prüfe vor Fahrtantritt die Straßenbedingungen; in der Regenzeit können Straßen und Flussdurchfahrten überflutet sein. Vermeide Fahrten in der Dämmerung und nachts. Achte auf Warnschilder vor Salzwasserkrokodilen an Gewässern.

When is the best time to travel the Savannah Way?

The dry season (April–September) is ideal — warm days, cooler nights and passable roads. Avoid the wet season (November–March), when heavy rain floods rivers and closes many unsealed sections.

How long do I need?

Allow four to eight weeks for the full Cairns–Broome journey. Shorter options work well too: a single state, or the East or West half, in roughly one to three weeks.

Do I need a 4WD?

A 4WD is recommended for the full route, especially the Gibb River Road and the unsealed Gulf stretches. Many sealed sections in Queensland and the NT suit an AWD/SUV, and a sealed-road alternative avoids the roughest tracks.

Which direction should I drive?

Either way works. Most travellers drive east to west (Cairns → Broome), following the dry season and finishing on the Kimberley coast.

Are the roads sealed?

It's a mix. Highways and town approaches are sealed; the Gibb River Road, Gulf back-roads and some park access roads are unsealed and corrugated. Always check current road conditions before setting out.

What about fuel, supplies and phone signal?

Distances between towns are long and services are sparse. Fill up at every opportunity, carry water, food and recovery gear, and expect little or no mobile coverage between towns — a UHF radio and a satellite phone or PLB are worthwhile.

Do I need permits or park passes?

Some national parks and Aboriginal lands require passes or permits. Check the Queensland, NT and WA park services and any Traditional Owner requirements before you travel.

Is it safe?

Yes, with preparation. Respect the remoteness, avoid driving at dawn, dusk or night (wildlife), heed crocodile warnings near water, and always tell someone your itinerary.

Can I do just part of the route?

Absolutely. The route splits naturally at Katherine into “Savannah Way East” (Cairns–Darwin) and “West” (the Kimberley to Broome), so you can drive one half or a single region.

Where do I stay — and should I book ahead?

Expect a mix of outback pubs, roadhouses, caravan parks, station stays and a handful of lodges. In peak dry season it's wise to book ahead where you can, particularly in smaller towns.
